De Worde's 1498 Morte Darthur and Caxton's copy-text
Naruto University of Education
Wynkyn de Worde's 1498 Morte has been assumed until recently to be a reprint of Caxton's 1485 edition. However, this article argues that de Worde's Malory was edited from multiple sources - Caxton's printed text as a primary source and a manuscript text as a consultation copy. The auxiliary source might be the Winchester MS, which has been proved to have stayed in or near Caxton's office until 1489, but the text and the mise-en-page of de Worde's edition (Book 18, chapters 20-1) strongly suggest that the manuscript text was not the Winchester MS but the setting-copy for Caxton's 1485 edition which de Worde inherited from his master. The editorial method de Worde adopted with the two sources was the same as he observed in Caxton's printshop, where the master turned to the Winchester MS as a back-up to improve questionable readings in his primary text.
