William Hazlitt (1737–1820), the Priestley Circle, and The Theological Repository: A Brief Survey and Bibliography

Duncan Wu

St Catherine's College Oxford

New evidence confirms that the Revd. William Hazlitt (father of the essayist) was in correspondence with Priestley and sheds further light on his involvement with Benjamin Franklin and other members of dissenting circles of the 1770s and 1780s. A principal catalyst for their acquaintance appears to have been Priestley's journal, The Theological Repository, Hazlitt's pseudonymous contributions to which are listed here for the first time.
