Engla Waldend, Rex Admirabilis: Poetic Representations of King Edgar

  Abstract

The poems on King Edgar (959–975) preserved in the manuscripts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle are customarily examined with the Battle of Brunanburh and The Capture of the Five Boroughs as examples of secular eulogy. This article sets the Old English verse on Edgar alongside that of the Latin adaptation of Æthelweard, West Saxon ealdorman. It offers a reading which draws out the religious and elegiac content of the vernacular texts, and illustrates how the English and Latin verses present two very different constructions of King Edgar, each carefully tailored to suit a particular context.
