Thomas Middleton's View of Public Utility

Ceri Sullivan

University of Wales Bangor

   Abstract

Thomas Middleton's A Chaste Maid at Cheapside, His Lordship's Entertainment at the Running Stream, and The Triumphs of Truth should be read together as commentary on the market in water made by his patrons the Myddeltons in 1613, in strong preference to a feminist reading of flows in the city comedy.
